I have long been in love with aromatherapy, but it wasn't until pregnancy and birth that I started learning that natural oils can offer more than nice fragrances. Through my experience as a doula and exposure to experts in essential oil therapy, I began learning the difference between pure oils and essential oils and how the latter can actually be used medicinally and therapeutically. I am absolutely fascinated with this field of medicine!

I'm so excited to be a guest blogger for Honeybee Mama to have the opportunity to share how I've become a family physician for my family. I'm Sarah Brennan! A twenty-four year old mama to a fantastic little nineteen month old girl. When I became pregnant, I suddenly realized how many chemicals are in baby products and wanted to take charge. While researching cloth diapers I heard of tea tree oil in the wipes solution and my love for essential oils spiraled from there with lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and more! Though none kept us from winding up in the hospital around her first birthday with RSV for six long days! After an allergist wrote prescriptions for Singular and an inhaler (without doing a single test), I researched further and found doTERRA. This company empowers me, educates me and anyone else willing to learn the simple tools to take back the responsibility for health care.

We haven't had to use a single breathing treatment on my toddler after our RSV scare. After sixteen years my husband no longer needs his inhaler and my sister is happily treating some anxiety thanks to what we've discovered! In short, I've used essential oils before but have never had the ah-ha moment where I felt like it was actually working. And I wanted to know just why my oils weren't cutting it. When I picked up my peppermint essential oil from the cabinet, I realized I didn't have peppermint essential oil...I had peppermint oil. This bottle was bought from a health food store and it says essential oil right in their logo. But the ingredients read: "100% Pure Peppermint Oil."  Not essential oil. See the word play there? Then in the caution section it says "Avoid contact with skin."  This oil was made for aromatherapy use and not at all to be used for anything healing!

In order for an essential oil to be labeled "100% pure" they only need to have 1/100th of the labeled essential oil in there. The rest can be 100% pure olive oil or another type of filler. It can also have pesticides, weeds and other compositions which aren't labeled. The truth is it's all about word play! You think you're getting pure essential oil but you're really getting pure oil with some essential oil in there. It's diluted. It's not pure. And you won't get the results you really could have with Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. doTERRA is a company that has raised the standards for all other essential oils.
